During the recent VCAs ( Volunteer Career Advisors) meeting organized by WSG, that I attended, we engaged in thought-provoking discussions on several topics related to career development and resilience within organizations. The questions that emerged are critical for businesses across the spectrum, but more so for SMEs, in Singapore.

  1. Effectiveness of Career Development Programs: We explored the effectiveness of existing career development programs within organizations. The consensus was that while the recognition of the importance of such programs is universal, their effectiveness often varies, influenced by factors like the sector and the company's size.

  2. Government Support for Career Development: A recurring theme was the potential role of government support, particularly through subsidies or financial assistance, in bolstering career development initiatives. Many acknowledged the need for such support, especially for nurturing soft skills.

  3. Employee Ownership of Career Development: The extent to which employees should take ownership of their own career development was another focal point. Participants emphasized that employees play a pivotal role in shaping their careers but also noted the importance of a supportive organizational environment.

  4. Challenges for SMEs in Career Development: SMEs face unique challenges in the realm of career development, largely due to resource constraints and industry-specific demands. These challenges were discussed, and the need for tailored solutions was evident.

In the midst of these discussions, the question of resilience emerged as a vital concern. Mature workers, often in their late 40s and 50s, have weathered numerous professional challenges over the past two decades, cultivating resilience. The question posed was how to impart this resilience to the current and future generations of the workforce.

This leads us to a broader organizational question: how to effectively manage a workforce composed of both experienced, resilient individuals and those who are yet to build their own resilience. Striking a balance and harmonizing the two is a challenge that many organizations face.

We invite and encourage contributions from all stakeholders. Please reach out and share your thoughts and experiences on these pressing issues. Together, we can navigate the complexities of career development and resilience in the ever-evolving landscape of the workforce. Your insights and ideas are invaluable as we work towards solutions that benefit both employees and organizations alike.
